The 2014 Riesling is sourced from stony slate soils that had been planted with clones from the Mosel. Fermented and aged in stainless steel (no malolactic fermentation), this wine opens pretty fascinating in its mix of slate and really ripe and concentrated Riesling flavors that come along bright, clear and flinty. Round and almost a bit sweet on the palate, but also with an enormous acidity, this is a full-bodied, dense yet clear, fresh and elegant Riesling. It is more like a German Riesling (delicate, pure, reductive, lean and finessed), rather than an Alsatian (ripe, full-bodied, tension-filled) or Austrian (rich, round and elegant) Riesling. Saying this, it is clear that Gantenbein's Riesling is a Riesling of its own. Once planned only for their private consumption, Martha and Daniel Gantenbein have created a great fan base for this wine, and its purity and piquant acidity lifts the 13% as if it was just 10%.
