The Franz Haas 2019 Alto Adige Pinot Nero (in a screw-cap bottle, with 100,000 bottles made) reveals pretty inner transparency over a light ruby color. There is a lot of variety-driven fruit with blue flower and wild berry, but this bottle also adds hints of licorice, tarry smoke and some pencil shaving. A second wave of fragrant, sweet-smelling fruit with apricot and orange peel also appears. This is a nice, straightforward expression that is vibrant and tight to the palate. It could be a nice dark-meat pairing for Thanksgiving dinner. 2021-2024

Franz Haas
Since its foundation in 1880, the Franz Haas winery has passed through seven generations with every firstborn named Franz Haas. Since the very beginning, the winery has always been focusing on expressing the quality of its grapes. During the 80’s most of the vines were replaced. Nowadays, Franz Haas works with grapes coming from 55-hectares of vineyards, mostly of his own, but also a part of them are rented or provided by other farmers. The vineyards are situated in the areas of Egna, Montagna and Aldino ranging in altitude from 240 and 1,150 meters above-sea-level. Each have their very own microclimatic and geological conditions, varying in soils from porphyry sand to clay to chalky. Due to the progressive climate change in 1999, Franz Haas rented several hectares on levels up to 850 meters above-sea-level in the area of Aldino and planted vines of Pinot Nero, Riesling, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco, Sauvignon and Müller-Thurgau at the highest altitudes. After more than fifteen years, this decision has proved to be quite cutting-edge. These new vineyards bring excellent results and supply grapes producing long-lasting, aromatic, fresh wines with a pronounced acidity.
