Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Pichon-Longueville Baron is enticingly scented of chocolate-covered cherries, crushed red currants and mulberries with touches of baking spices, potpourri and bay leaves plus a hint of fallen leaves. Sumptuously elegant, refreshing and medium-bodied with gorgeous, expressive, perfumed red fruits and very fine, very firm tannins, it has a persistent, perfumed finish. Its remarkable intensity, freshness and very firm frame suggest a long-lived Pichon Baron, which should cellar gracefully for 30+ years.

Really packed, with very energetic blackberry, black currant and plum fruit, pushed by anise and sweet spice and rumbling through the broad, iron-edged finish. Shows lots of heft, but the impression is fresh, and this is built for the long haul. Impressive.—J.M

This is a muscular edition with attractive, deeply ripe blackberries and plums set amid firm and assertively linear tannins that hold the finish long and on point. Cool-fruited finish. There’s great potential here. Try this from 2023.

77 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 23 % Merlot. Zwei Mal verkostet. 18/20 2025 – 2055

Château Pichon-Longueville Baron
A Second Growth marked by its Cabernet-dominated full-bodied reds, Château Pichon-Longueville Baron is one of Bordeaux’s most famed Super Seconds. Founded in the late 17th century, the château was built in 1851 and boasts a breathtaking view of the Gironde Estuary. The fine-wine branch of the AXA insurance company, AXA Millésimes acquired the property in 1987 bringing in owner of Château Lynch-Bages, Jean-Michel Cazes shortly after to run the estate. Together with major renovations of the estate and the Cazes’ management, excellence was soon restored. Retiring in 2000, Christian Seely assumed Cazes’ important role as managing director. Today, their signature muscular wines are a culmination of years of precision and craftsmanship, from vineyard to cellar. Pichon-Longueville Baron is the rich and layered Grand Vin, this five-star wine gains in depth with at least 10 years of cellaring. The second wine, Les Tourelles de Longueville was introduced in 1986 and similarly conveys the château’s classic powerful, but elegant style.
