Lots of roses and dark fruit, such as blackberries and brambleberries on the nose. Full-bodied, yet tight and poised, with real focus and firmness and seamless tannins that run the length of the wine. Minerality and persistence in a cool way. This is very serious for the vintage and for the cellar. Try after 2025.

This unfurls as seductively as a cashmere scarf, offering black tea and incense notes amidst a lush wave of dark plum, fig and blackberry reduction flavors. The subtle inlay of charcoal, tobacco and sweet bay adds length and detail through the finish. Gorgeous. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2024 through 2038. —J.M.

Producer
Château Pavie Macquin
Planted amongst three Premiers Grands Crus Classés, Château Pavie-Macquin consists of a single piece of land on the noteworthy limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion. The 15-hectare vineyard is planted to a large portion of Merlot, with smaller parts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. By 1994, the Right Bank visionary, Nicholas Thienpoint took control of the estate. Today, the winery produces quality-conscious wines that are elegant, tightly wound and structured, noted by their unique mineralistic characteristics. Famed oenologist, Stéphane Derenoncourt joined the team in 1990, and has worked as consulting vintner at the château ever since. Together, Nicholas and Stéphane developed a high-quality viticulture procedure which has elevated the château to the prestigious rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé wine. With minimal handling in the cellar, the Grand Vin, Pavie-Macquin is an opulent structured red with well-integrated notes of oak and spiced fruits.
