The 2016 Pavie a blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. Very deep purple-black in color, it needs a little coaxing to begin, slowly unfurling to reveal a fragrant perfume of violets, chocolate-covered cherries, crushed blueberries and eucalyptus over a core of preserved plums, kirsch, black raspberries and crème de cassis plus hints of licorice and chargrilled meat. Full-bodied and built like a brick house, it has a solid foundation of firm, super ripe, grainy tannins and seamless freshness interknit with the black fruit preserves and minerally layers, finishing very long and very decadent. Superb!

This is a rather showy--and captivating--display of fruit, with waves of lush cassis, raspberry and plum reduction flavors flowing through with authority and grace while a swath of chalky minerality stays deeply buried throughout. Toasty, glistening with vanilla and apple wood notes, but the fruit has the oak bridle easily in hand. One of the Right Bank showstoppers of the vintage. Best from 2024 through 2040. 6,667 cases made.
The enveloping amarena-cherry fruit clothes the huge tannin structure, but these are really fine tannins and, together with the acidity, they give the wine great vitality. Needs quite some time in bottle to resolve the tannins, but the balance is certainly there. Drinkable now, but best from 2025. Château Quintus vertical tasting. SP.

Château Pavie
Pavie stands for the small vine-grown peaches that previously occupied this Saint-Émilion plot of land prior to the 4th century. Today, Château Pavie carries its heritage in its name, and stands as the largest Premier Grand Cru Classé in the entire appellation. With 37-hectares of continuous vines and ample amounts of sunshine, this remarkable south-facing lot can be classified into three specific terroirs. The newly redesigned estate by Alberto Pinto, has a large glass façade that offers an outstanding view of the hillside vineyard, some even claim it’s "the most beautiful spot in Saint-Émilion.” Purchased by Gérard Perse in 1998, owner of the Pavie-Decesse and Monbousquet châteaux, Pavie is now one of the greatest new wave producers. Pavie, like the other Perse wines have developed into late-harvested and highly extracted reds, balanced by their dichotomy of opulence and delicacy. Promoted to the Premier Grand Cru Classé A status in 2012, the Grand Vin, Pavie is an exemplarily Perse wine, vinified with a modern approach, the result is rich, concentrated and high in quality.
