I drank this in Antibes, France today with some friends and I was pleasantly surprised. I have been pretty underwhelmed with Le Grand Dame recently but the 2004 shows a return to the finesse and balance of the cuvée. A balanced yet dense Champagne with dried apple, pear and hints of bread dough. Very appley and lemony. Pretty strawberry undertones. Full body, bright acidity and a round texture. Refined and flavorful. A little sweeter than some tête de cuvée Champagnes but delicious. One of the more balanced vintages of La Grande Dame. Drink now.

Broad on the palate, though well-knit and svelte overall, with seamless integration of the firm acidity, structuring flavors of smoke, poached plum, creamed almond, piecrust and lemon curd. Features a graceful, mineral-tinged finish. Drink now through 2025.

The 2004 Brut Rosé La Grande Dame is very expressive, offering up a maturing bouquet of burnt orange, toasted nuts, vanilla pod, candied peel and mocha. Medium to full-bodied, it's open-knit and enveloping, displaying considerable charm and immediate appeal, albeit without the depth, length and cut of its 2008 counterpart.
