89 Robert Parker
This sweet, rich, supple-textured, medium to full-bodied wine exhibits a dense purple color and youthful notes of blackcurrant, licorice and spring flowers. This 2005 is impressively endowed, with moderate tannin still to shed. It should drink well for at least another decade. It is a sleeper of the vintage.
Producer
Château Charmail
Found in the Haut-Médoc appellation, Château Charmail lies just along the Gironde River. The vineyard is made up of one single plot, which extends right to the water's edge. The name Charmail comes from its 16th century origins, when the Trevey de Charmail family settled in the Médoc. From the 18th century Charmail was already a big player on the Bordeaux map and since then vines have always been cultivated here. Olivier Sèze took over operations in 1982. In a few years, with his vision and thoroughness, he managed to impose a distinct style of winemaking here and made Charmail one of the most valued wines bearing the Haut-Médoc label. Vintage after vintage for nearly 30 years, he has made nicely well-balanced wines. In 2008, Bernard d’Halluin, a Lille native, purchased the château.
